Being a car driver for more than 10 years, I have developed a keen interest in cars and love checking out new car launches to find out the new developments and features.

Thanks to Cycle & Carriage KIA Pte Ltd and The Hoffman Agency, I was invited to an exclusive media preview on 6 Jan 2017 way before the embargo date of 12 Jan 2017 for the release on the news of the all-new Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle.

Exclusive Media Preview of the all-new Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle

The exclusive media preview was held in the Wine Company in Dempsey Hill, where the NIRO was parked right outside for invited press to take a closer look.  As it was drizzling that day, I waited for a while before I could take photos with this all-new emission vehicle,  The Niro – labelled a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV) – represents a new concept from the Korean car brand, and marks the development of Kia’s first dedicated eco-car platform.  This is the first-of-its-kind compact HUV, engineered from the ground up, with dedicated green technologies for greater fuel economy.

As the rain got a bit heavier, the guests were ushered into the Wine Company for some food and drinks as well as a presentation by Mr Eric Chan, Managing Director - Singapore Motor Operations, Jardine Cycle & Carriage.

He commented, “We wanted to give our consumers everything that they could want from a compact crossover in terms of practicality and styling, while providing the typically low running costs associated with a dedicated hybrid powertrain. In fact, the compact SUV market remains one of the fastest-growing segments in Singapore, and by offering a handsome, modern appearance, high practicality and extraordinary fuel economy, Kia’s new feature-packed Niro will be the most appealing and desirable car in its price segment.”

We were treated to some food and wine while waiting patiently for the rain to stop before taking a closer look at The Niro.

Finally the rain stopped and I managed to get into the NIRO to check it out.

Come follow me and take a closer look at the NIRO's interior!

The first thing that caught my eyes was the powerful sunroof opens or closes with the press of a button to let in sunshine and fresh air.

The blind spot detection sensors trigger visual alerts to inform you of vehicles in the blind spot, for easier and safer lane changes.

The wireless smartphone charger charge your compatible mobile phone wirelessly on the charging pad-without the need to find and connect a cord.

The driver and front passenger ventilated seats provide cool air on hot days, ensuring you a comfortable and refreshing ride.

Bold styling for all-new hybrid model

A new addition to Kia’s design-led product range, the Kia Niro will boast a brand new design, with a sporty, aerodynamic body, subtly sculptured surfaces and styling details finishing off the car’s modern new look. While the Niro is an all-new model, with no direct predecessors, it still features the company’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille and a series of other design cues from the latest Kia products. The styling of the new Niro development project has been led by Kia’s design centers in California, USA and Namyang, Korea.

The car’s designers highlight the most modern architectural designs and contemporary sculptural art as key inspirations behind the new HUV’s body. The vehicle boasts smooth, sleek proportions, while its relatively wide stance portrays stability and a low center of gravity. The long wheelbase minimizes the size of the front and rear overhangs, while ensuring occupants enjoy the maximum possible interior space.

Class-leading fuel economy and 88g/km CO2 emissions

The main focus of engineering teams’ efforts behind the development of the new model is to deliver class-leading fuel economy in the compact crossover segments. The Kia Niro will combine a stylish design with greater fuel economy than its rivals, with CO2 emissions rating of 88 g/km (combined).

Throughout the Niros development process, it has been conceived as a dedicated hybrid model. The car will achieve its ultra-low emissions levels and impressive fuel economy with a downsized hybrid powertrain, pairing Kia’s 1.6-liter ‘Kappa’ gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine (105 ps power output and 147 Nm of torque) with a 1.56 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and 32 kW electric motor. The powertrain’s combined power output and torque will be applied to the road through a highly-efficient six-speed double-clutch transmission.

The platform underpinning the Niro has been engineered specifically to accommodate this next-generation gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.

The Niro also officially received a Guinness World Record® for the lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast (hybrid car). The new record-setting mark is an incredible 76.6 mpg.

Technology that provides a piece of mind

Based upon a bespoke new platform, the Kia Niro’s body is made of 53% Kia’s proprietary Advanced High Strength Steel resulting in a rigid chasis. Hot stamping of components are also applied to 24 key stress areas, contributing to the class-leading fuel economy and high safety standards. Part of a wider effort by Kia, the extended use of advanced-high strength steel will help Kia reach its target of a 5% reduction in the average weight of new car bodies by 2020 compared to 2014 levels.

With a strong, lightweight body and 7-airbag system, the Niro has achieved a 5-STAR Euro NCAP rating, building on Kia’s reputation for producing cars with a strong crash safety performance. The company’s engineering teams are also targeting the highest possible marks from independent safety test organizations around the world, aided by a host of the latest passive, active and pre-collision safety features such as the Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and more.

The high-strength platform will not only result in a high safety rating, but also help minimize noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), a key focus throughout the Niro’s conception. The strong body also enables Kia’s chassis and dynamics experts to give the car a smooth, refined ride and engaging handling characteristics.

10-year lithium battery warranty

Cycle & Carriage Kia gives you an additional piece of mind by offering a 10-year lithium battery warranty on top of the existing 10-year engine warranty and 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.

I was very happy to be invited by KIA Singapore to their showroom for the Media Launch of 2017 Cerato Forte K3 as I love cars!  They never fail to amaze me with all the specs and features which makes driving so much more interesting.

When I reached KIA Showroom located at 239 Alexandra Road, I was warmly greeted by the Assistant Manager, Marketing, Mei Ting, who immediately showed me around so that I can have a better understanding with regards to 2017 Cerato Forte K3, which a new facelift version.

I also got a chance to sit inside the car to check out the internal features of 2017 Cerato Forte K3.

Please don't be mistaken.  I am not the car model hired for this media launch... hahaha!

Besides the red 2017 Cerato Forte K3, there was another white one on display.  I wouldn't miss out the chance of taking photo with the white car as well.

My blogger friend, Shaun, was also invited to the media launch too.  So glad that he was there as it seemed like we were the only two bloggers invited to this launch.

More photo taking with the cars!

Pretending to be driving the car... lol.

After Mr Eric Chan, Managing Director of Singapore Motor Operations, Jardine Cycle & Carriage Limited finished his speech, we grabbed the chance to take photos with him.

Want to know more about the specs and features of the 2017 Cerato Forte K3?  Here you go...

It has been about one year and 2 months since I sold away my Volkswagen Beetle convertible.  Till today, I still deeply miss it.  On the roads, when i see a Volkswagen Beetle convertible or even just a Volkswagen Beetle zoom past, my heart will ache a lot.

My previous Volkswagen Beetle convertible. Still miss it very much!

The reason why I sold my previous car away was because my two kids, Kaiser and Rayes, were growing up fast.  As a single mummy who had to ferry them up and down childcare centre, bringing them to enrichment classes, going for our mummy-son bonding outings, it became a chore to bring down the front row of car seat, climb into the backseat while carrying Rayes into the car and securing him in the car seat.

As such, I made the painful decision to sell my Volkswagen Beetle convertible away and bought a Honda Jazz in the interim period while I think through carefully what my next car should be.

I know that I can't buy a two door car, as I need to factor in the fact that it should be convenient for the kids and my helper to get in and out of the car easily.

Secondly, I am someone who prefers a small car for ease of zipping around and getting into a parking lot easily.

Thirdly, I wanted a reliable continental car brand as I still prefer the heavy handling of the car through the steering wheel.  Most continental cars just feel so stable when I do a turn and when I cruise at a faster speed, the cars do feel like they are floating in the air.

After considering the above three factors, I have zoomed into one particular car brand... Mercedes Benz!  It is a well known reliable continental car brand which even my car mechanic recommends.

After looking at all the various Mercedes Benz car brand models, I have set my dream to own a Mercedes Benz A170.  Yes, you must be wondering... why the hell does Elaine Heng want a car that is no longer in production and she has to buy a second hand car, Mercedes Benz A170, if she wants to own one?

Mercedes Benz A170. Photo taken from mad4wheels.com

Reasons being:

1) Elaine Heng likes small, easy to handle cars and after she looks at all the Mercedes Benz car models, only A170 fits her bill.

2) Elaine Heng feels that it is kinda silly to pay for a new car when depreciation is so high.  She prefers a second hand car where depreciation is less steep.

3) Elaine Heng doesn't want to fork out too much money on a car and prefers to have some extra cash on hand for the kids.  Being a single mummy is not easy especially when it comes to finances.  I have to ensure that the kids have food on the table, good education, gets to go out of the house for family outings, on top of other commitments like housing loan, insurance, etc.

Yes, my dream is to own a Mercedes Benz A170!  But we all know that owning a car has a hefty price tag to pay.  Even though this is a dream,  I hope to fulfill very soon as I know that GoBear is running a contest where you and me stand a chance to win S$10,000 CASH!  This will add into the funds which I am setting aside.

Fourth-Generation Sport Sportage Compact SUV Boasts Sophisticated Design, Premium Smart Features and Significant Ride Quality

I loves automobiles so whenever I get to attend a car launch, I always look forward to the reveal.  This time round, it is the All-New KIA Sportage!  The private event was held at MoCA cafe in 27A Loewen  Road.

I was so excited to see the fourth generation of KIA Sportage after looking at the photo boards that depicted every previous generation.  It was amazing to see how the styling changed over the years.

Mr Eric Chan, Managing Director of Cycle & Carriage, gave a wonderful speech on the background and new features of the fourth generation of KIA Sportage, before it was revealed to everyone.

Here is the first look of the All-New KIA Sportage in action.  Check out the video below.

Take a look at the amazing detailing.

I definitely didn't miss the chance of taking a photo with the all-new KIA Sportage in white.

Summary Winning Features of the All-New KIA Sportage

  • New design and advanced technologies for fourth-generation compact SUV
  • Modern layout and greater refinement for high quality new cabin
  • Greater passenger comfort with more space and less noise
  • The safest Sportage yet, with a stronger body and new active safety tech
  • Smoother, more refined ride and greater handling agility

Inspiring and Aggressive Design

Design ed under the direction of Kia’s President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, the all-new Sportage clinched the highly coveted Red Dot Design Awards and prestigious iF Design Award, further reinforcing Kia’s reputation for the highest design standards.

As part of the ongoing collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox and the X- Men movie franchise, Kia created a distinctive second generation X-Car ahead of the X-Men: Apocalypse’s global release. Inspired by the iconic character, Mystic, this exclusive variant of the Kia Sportage mimics the appearance and powers of the bold shape-shifter.
With an exterior that juxtaposes smooth curves with sharp creases, the revised face of the all-new Sportage features the most significant change over the outgoing model alongside with completely new body panels.

The all-new Sportage remains instantly recognizable thanks to its sloping roofline and sharply raked rear window. Longer front overhangs (up by 20 mm) and shorter rear overhangs (reduced by 10 mm) continue to be Sportage signatures, adding to the car’s more raked profile; while a longer, more aerodynamic spoiler and bolder wheel arches give the compact SUV a more dynamic appearance.

Kia’s hallmark “tiger-nose” grille resides in the front fascia while the headlights are positioned higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of the sharply detailed bonnet.

At the rear, the new Sportage features more horizontal forms and clearly defined lines, with smooth bodywork on the tailgate, emphasising the car’s width and giving the compact SUV a stance that exudes stability. Inspired by the 2013 Kia Provo concept, slim combination lamps running along a horizontal parallel are joined by a strip that runs the width of the rear, while the turn signals and reversing lights integrated into the rear bumper to add visual weight to the lower half.

The All-New KIA Sportage in 5 Amazing Colours

Modern Layout and Greater Refinement for High Quality New Cabin

The Sportage boasts an all-new interior, a key improvement over the third-generation car. The focus for the design team behind the new interior was to create a cabin that offered a wide,  driver-oriented dashboard, with a simple, modern design.

The interior blends metalwork with soft-touch materials and clearly defined horizontal lines, portraying a high level of attention to details and mechanical precision.

The all-new Sportage’s interior sports higher quality materials with greater use of soft- touch materials, leather and fine stitching to create a well-appointed cabin, surrounding all occupants in an ambience of unprecedented luxury. The result is an interior that majors on refinement and modern sophistication, with greater soundproofing measures adopted to reduce significantly the intrusion of exterior noise.

To further distinguish the all-new Sportage from the outgoing model, horizontal lines are used to emphasise interior width more effectively and deliver an impression of spaciousness and sportiness. The confident lateral design of the dashboard divides it into two clear zones – ‘display’ and ‘control’.

The ‘display’ zone is focused purely on delivering information to occupants in the clearest way possible via the driver’s instrument cluster. Separated by a bold line running the length of the dashboard is the ‘control’ zone, with the central console cascading downwards and tilted 10 degrees towards the driver. The new, uncluttered dashboard now comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, and offers drivers a highly ergonomic layout that is easy to see and use, even on the move.

Greater Space and Improvement Passenger Comfort

The fourth-generation model is set to be the most practical Sportage yet thanks to increased exterior and interior dimensions, with the vehicle’s development teams realising greater space and comfort for all passengers.

Although the all-new Sportage is as wide as the outgoing model, the luggage area has been widened by 35 mm, with a lowered load lip reducing the lift-over height by 47 mm to 732 mm, to ensure ease of loading heavy items into the car.

The safest Sportage yet – stronger body and a wealth of active safety systems

Safety, as always, is a top priority for Kia, and the all-new Kia Sportage builds on the brand’s reputation for offering the highest standards in occupant and pedestrian crash safety. The fourth-generation of Kia’s best-seller has been engineered to meet the toughest and most demanding crash safety tests, thanks to an even stronger bodyshell, a wide array of passive safety equipment and the latest active safety and autonomous hazard avoidance technologies.

Smoother, more refined ride and greater handling agility

The fully-independent front suspension carries over the format of the outgoing model, but features a range of modifications to make the best use of the new bodyshell. The new setup achieves a leap forward in ride quality, while also delivering sharper handling. Modifications include revised bushing mount positions for greater stability and more natural responses to changing road surfaces, as well as stiffer wheel bearings and bushings resulting in more direct handling and greater stability in all conditions. The steering gearbox is also mounted further forward on the axle for smoother steering inputs.

For the rear suspension – also fully-independent, including the adoption of dual lower- arm multi-link suspension for two-wheel drive models – the new Sportage receives a stiffer cross member to cut road noise and vibrations from intruding into the cabin. Specially-tuned dampers have a longer rebound stroke to eliminate smaller vibrations from poor road surfaces, while the rear subframe is now mounted on isolated bushings to further improve the NVH performance of the suspension. Finally, slight changes to the suspension geometry, as well as stiffer wheel bearings and lateral bushings, quell understeer and allow for more direct handling.

These suspension upgrades, combined with the 40 mm growth in the Sportage’s wheelbase over the outgoing model, provide the all-new model with far superior damping over poor road surfaces, while offering drivers more driving fun through improved handling responses and reduced understeer.

Refined and spirited performance

Every engine in the range is compliant with the latest Euro 5 emission standard, resulting in cleaner exhaust emissions. This has been achieved, not only without compromising on-road performance, but enhancing it.

The fourth-generation model features the “Nu” 2.0L MPi engine with Dual Continuous Variable Valve Timing (DCVVT), delivering 155 PS and 192 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Steering is another area of improvement, engineers mounted the steering box farther forward on the axle for better weight distribution. With 25 percent less friction than the previous unit, the all-new Sportage offers smoother and more precise steering inputs and better feel.

Comfort  and  convenience

The all-new Sportage debuts an advanced 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Sportage also features up to two USB charging points, one in the front and an optional one in the rear, to allow occupants to charge their mobile devices on the move.

Other new available features include a rear-view parking camera with dynamic parking lines and a Smart Welcome function, which turns on interior and door handle lamps and unfolds the door mirrors once the smart key fob is located within 1.3-1.7 metres of the door handle.
